Found the problem….

… I think. When I finally got the engine out and on the work stand, I was easily able to remove the last pan bolt and remove the pan and front cover. There I found (besides the broken timing chain wadded up in the bottom of the front cover), a mangled woodruff key from an earlier attempt to install the balancer with the engine in the frame (a genuine pain in the ass, or should I say neck). In addition, the crank and cam sprocket are not aligned as well as they should be.

However, so far nothing else appears to be damaged. Once I get the new timing chain (or possibly gear drive) installed, I’ll do a leakdown test on all the cylinders, to ensure there are no bent valves. Stay tuned, film at 11….
